About Shai (שי)

I’m blogging for the semester I’ll be spending at Ben-Gurion Univ. of the Negev (in Beersheba) during fall 2012 to chronicle my adventures abroad. During this time I hope to travel Israel and other nearby countries.

I am a CUNY Queens/Macaulay Honors College senior double-majoring in English and Anthropology. Currently a writing tutor at the Writing Center at QC, I tutor and mentor students of various economic and ethnic backgrounds at the college level in written and spoken English.

My high hopes for this trip include gaining fluency in Hebrew after taking Ulpan and an intensive Hebrew course, volunteering at a Hand in Hand bilingual Hebrew/Arabic school, and learning to comfortably adapt to new environments, peoples and lifestyles.

Professionally, I’d like to be a high school English teacher/linguistic anthropologist/sex educator extraordinaire. Ideally, I will intern at a reproductive health organization such as Planned Parenthood and spend time teaching English abroad in a Spanish-speaking country, Vietnam or Korea. I have a passion for coffee and would like to train as a barista.
